Tool Box

This morning our hero crawled over to Stephen's tool box to check it out.

He took great joy in wiggling the handle back and forth.

WHOOPS! Caught in mid air...youch. Luckily he got wedged between the chair and tool box so he didn't hit his head.

Back in action, trying it again.

Gorgeous Saskie Wedding

There is nothing more fun that a good old Saskatchewan wedding. My former Executive Assistant planned a wonderfully fun, creative, lighthearted, and unique day.

The highlights were:

- the Pile of Bones Brass Band that played covers such as Billy Jean and did their own special arrangement of the wedding march

- the cold beer available to drink during the ceremony

- the huge beautiful Saskatchewan sky along the grid roads

- some guy wearing a rider jersey over his suit

- the delicious supper (not dinner) of cabbage rolls, perogies, and amazing rolls

- rootbeer floats instead of cutting the cake

- hula hoop competitions on the dance floor

- tamborines at every table to get the couple to smooch

- apparently there was a choreographed group dance with the couple and their parents which we unfortunately missed when we took Felix home. I kept asking them to repeat their performance to no avail.

I love weddings that have so many personal touches. It was a beautiful day and now Megan & Jer are wife and hubby - congratulations!!

Solid Foods & Standing Up

One of the many many things that has amazed me over the past 7.5 months of having Felix around is how fast babies learn.

For example, he's been crawling (or more accurately creeping) for just over a week. You'd think perfecting that skill would keep him occupied for a month or so. This morning at 5am while he was playing on the floor and Steve and I were half asleep on the couches I heard Steve say "BOODY LOOK!" I looked over in time to see Felix pulling himself up to standing from the coffee table. We decided to move him away and hope that it was a fluke that he wouldn't repeat immediately.

Felix has been eating solid (or more accurately mushy) food for almost two months. We've been doing a combination of things...mushing up what we're eating, spoon feeding him puree's, and throwing in a bit of this craze I'd been reading about called Baby Led Weaning. BLW is simply giving the kid hunks of food and letting him suck on it until he figures out how to chew and swallow. BLW has by far worked the best for Felix. I like that it forces him to grab whatever food he wants off of his tray and work on his dexterity to get the slippery hunks into his mouth. I also like that he learns what different foods look like rather than just seeing them in puree form.

This morning we shared an orange. It was fun to see him experimenting by grabbing it and sucking the peel and the fruit side. I then noticed he'd completely stopped what he was doing and sat very quietly watching me eat my orange...he no longer sucked on the peel side. Amazing!

Perhaps it isn't really that amazing and I'm just amazed by it because these little progressions towards milestones are now the highlight of my day.

Getting Closer

Home Sweet Home

We had a wonderfully busy trip to Ontario, and two weeks went by in a flash. Whenever I return to Saskatchewan after being in Ontario, I really notice some of the differences.

In Saskatchewan, people go out of their way to hold open a door for me when I'm pushing a stroller.

Back in Saskatchewan, I often forget that someone will always be driving in my blind spot and must re-adjust my defensive driving techniques.

In Saskatchewan you can't buy rapini or spadini at the grocery store.

In Saskatchewan, you should be wary of singing your heart out in your car at a red light...the person in the lane next to you just might be on the Board of Directors.

Mobility

Felix started to crawl on July 3 during wedding intermission. Marija and I took Felix back to the hotel room for a rest between the ceremony and reception. He was sitting on the bed and playing when he started shimming himself from one side of the bed to the other. It's not exactly pretty, but he can get himself from point a to point b.

There was no time to really encourage this until we got home. I put him down on the floor and off he went. He particularly likes to crawl towards my laptop and then bang on it.

Today this newfound mobility has led to the following exciting moments:

1) Bonking his head on the coffee table (he has a huge goose egg).
2) Getting a scratch on the cheek from Keith Richards who didn't like Felix's "petting".
3) Crawling towards the stairs.
4) Putting a tiny piece of cat food found on the floor into his mouth.

This parenting thing has just become exponentially more challenging.

Lessons Learned in Ontario

Felix learns to eat Zia's organic fruit from her backyard.

Felix gets a piano lesson from Klin at Mitzi's sister.

Felix learns how to share a lap, with his friend Darius.

Felix learns that his Zio is pretty funny.

Felix learns to crawl on the hotel bed between the wedding and reception while looking fine in his wedding gear.
