(E)Dday +1

We had a lovely Dday party for Baldy yesterday. My MIL, BIL, SIL and adorable nephew came over and we ate a big bowl of chili. Stephen had to miss the party due to being called out to work, but he's so so close to being done. I really loved having the visitors yesterday though because it has been a lot of weekends of Stephen working on the house and the huge project he has going on at work right now (so much work/stress for him and a lot of parenting left on my plate).

This morning I took Felix to his swimming lesson. I was bursting out of my maternity bathing suit and I'm a bit slow, but it was nice to get out and into the water with my little guy. The walk home, however, was a nightmare as I was trying out the double stroller and Felix refused to sit in either section, spilled his snack everywhere, and was screaming SNACK SNACK SNACK all the way down Queen West West. I had to call Stephen to run down and help me as I just couldn't carry him and push the stroller in my current state...I felt like a total wimp having to call in for back-up. Felix and I really fit into the Parkdale milieu this morning.

Baby Namin'

When it comes to Baby Namin' Stephen and I have pretty laid back, easy discussions and are generally in total agreement. This surprises me, and to be honest, I think we've had more heated discussions about paint colour or faucet choices...definitely about lighting and height of hanging a painting. ;)

We've been pretty relaxed this go 'round and have had the odd five minute discussion about names when he gets home from working on the house and a few good ones traveling up to the cottage this summer. Our choices have actually changed a lot from where we started (with our secondary choices for boy/girl when we had Felix).

It's hard to write this without going into too much detail (I don't want to give away the surprise) or jinx it in case the baby comes out and doesn't look like a Vinyl or Jesus (oh, whoops, gave it away!)

Our final choices were made because (in descending order of importance):

1) we love the names
2) they have strong connections to family (just like Felix who was named with the initial F for Nonno Francesco and his middle name after his Opa, Abraham)
3) are a little old-fashioned...yes, it's the craze right now and I love it.
4) easy to pronounce
5) no weird alternative spellings
6) none of our friends/cousins/aquaintances have kids (or pets) with these names
7) they aren't on any top 100 lists (at the moment) so we hopefully don't meet any same-named kids at the playground.
8) doesn't have an unfortunate meaning (I love that Felix's name means happy/fortunate/lucky and that is exactly his little personality).

It's so much pressure to name a person and such an awesome thing to be able to do. We've had mainly very positive comments about Felix's name and some very honest negative ones as well. You can't please everyone, but I'm pretty excited about both our boy and girl choice and very curious about which name will soon be taking over the topic of my upcoming blog posts!

Public Urination Patrol

Yeah, I know we chose to make our home close to a major intersection in Toronto and that our garage backs onto an alley shared by Queen Street businesses, and perhaps I should just take this issue as a fact of life in the big city, but it's gross.

With no exaggeration, I probably see a guy relieving himself in the alley (often on our neighbour's garage - thankfully we are the second house in) three times a week. Felix can even point from our car (or his bedroom window) and say "man peeing!"

I recently read something in NOW about some businesses who started to take photos of people peeing in their alley and posting photos of them with "SMALL PENIS" boldly marked above their headshot. I must say, it inspired me.

Last night as I was about to park the car in the garage I saw a man with a super large can of Arizona iced tea unzip himself in front of our neighbour's garage. Instead of driving past and trying to ignore it, I stopped my car in front of him and pretended I couldn't get by. I stopped and stared for a slightly more than uncomfortable period of time. The guy frowned and quickly re-zipped before he could relieve himself and walked quickly back to the street.

I feel like I won some sort of victory yesterday and this may become the SARSCAM 2011.

Baldy: 39 Weeks, 3 Days

It's hard to believe that it is 4 days until EDD (Estimated Due Date), October 29. Last night we had the wonderful news that one of our old neighbours had their baby boy (he was due mid-November)...and I'm delighted, but I must say envious!!

It's not like this pregnancy has been difficult or anything, I'm just SO EXCITED. Now that I'm done work I can hardly wait to meet the baby! I've promised Stephen that I would cross my legs until Sunday when he will be done the house. Yes, I'm uncomfortable and feeling like a beached whale and have to pee every 2 minutes...this is another active little Boodlini who kicks me for a couple hours every night and then has about 30 minutes of hiccups to follow up. I'm trying my best to enjoy and remember every last little kick.

Felix's Great-grandmother (May) gave him this extremely loud and obnoxious bike horn shaped like a dinosaur that he likes to squeeze and laugh when it makes me jump...it also makes Baldy jump in my belly so I know it has good hearing.

Felix has been climbing into the basinette (as have the cats) to check things out. This morning he kept pointing at it and telling me to lie down in it. I'd act shocked and say "NO, Mommy too big, mommy not baby!" and he'd chuckle hysterically. Our little guy is becoming a joker. Yesterday morning he told me that his cereal was "HOT, OUCH"...I would pretend to act concerned (even though I had given him cold cheerios) and then he would say "NOOoooooo!!!!!" and laugh and laugh. What a little nut!

I stopped by the mall this morning to buy a few baby necessities and had to stop and buy a "coming home" outfit for Baldy. Just a new fresh little sleeper with a matching hat, but I got a little teary because I did the same thing for Felix and the realness of this big event is setting in! Did I mention I CAN'T WAIT?

Anyway, it's hard to know what the next few weeks will bring or when Baldy's birthday will be, but we are almost ready and I'm so excited to continue our adventures as a family of 4!!

No Pushing

We've been having a struggle with diaper changes lately. The other night Stephen just resorted to holding him down with one hand while putting the diaper on with the other. Felix stopped struggling, looked up at Stephen and said "No pushing, Daddy".

Phrases

Recently, I've been taken aback by Felix's attempts at sentences. It's one of those things that is funny because it absolutely amazes and delights me as his mom, but I'm aware that every kid learns to speak and knew this would happen. It's just so cool to see it develop day by day and coming out of the mouth of your baby who wasn't even in our life 2 years ago!

Some examples as of late:

This morning - "Mommy, read book AGAIN?"

"One helicopter, TWO helicopters!!" (pluralizing!)

"More chocolate cheerios please mommy?"

"Thank you mommy/daddy" (sometimes he just covers all his bases and calls one of us mommy/daddy).

"Be careful mommy!" (As I'm backing the car into the garage...this one blew me away...and as I had to do a re-do he said, "It ok mommy")

At the High Park Zoo "WOAH WOW WOAH...EMU big eyes!!"
