I suspect that anyone reading this blog feels the same way about this, and probably equally passionate about it but I want to say it anyway.
It is so important to take your kiddies to see live performances from a young age.
We took Felix to see Thomas the Train Live this morning and it was the most amazing thing to watch. He fell asleep on the ride to the theatre and happily slept through the box office line, going in, sitting down, us taking his coat off, and about 15 minutes of waiting for the show to start.
We woke him up as it was starting as we didn't want all the sounds and lights and people around us to completely surprise him. He was a little drowsy as the show started, but it was incredible. I knew he was a bit young to take to such an event (even though he'd been to a few symphony shows and rehearsals at a much younger age) and wasn't sure if we were going to make it through. He sat on our laps and watched the entire first half in sheer delight, enthusiastically "PEEP PEEP"-ing and clapping along with the crowd.
At one point he looked at us and twisted his arms as if to say "what the heck is going on this is so AWESOME". At intermission we let him run around the lobby and he was as pumped up as I have ever seen him, trying to chase all the kids. During the second half every time Thomas left the stage he continually said "BYE BYE...WOO WOO" very loudly during quiet parts and had everyone around us chuckling.
It was really neat to see a 16 month old's reaction to live theatre and just how much every moment of it amazed him.
Instead of renting a DVD or going to a movie, please spend a few extra dollars to go and see something live - you are not only supporting (preferably) your local artists/musicians/actors/arts administrators (ha) and performing arts venues but you are treating yourself to an experience you will remember and a much more interactive and educational experience for your kiddies.
